Georgia Swimming Pool Restrictions Eased
On February 6, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue issued an order exempting outdoor swimming pools from water restrictions caused by the severe drought. Per the order, outdoor pools, spas, hot tubs and kiddie pools may be filled from April through September 2008. The governor’s action resulted from a major advocacy effort which APSP and its Region 10 Service Center Manager Teresa Christmas coordinated with the APSP Georgia chapter board, Charlie Schobel, and many other APSP members. ICC Publishes News about Pool and Spa Safety Act;
Code Hearings to Address ICC Adoption of ANSI/APSP-7 Standard
APSP has helped the International Code Council (ICC) get the word out to its thousands of code official members about the enactment of the new federal pool and spa safety law (Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act) with an article in the February 5 issue of ICC E-News, a monthly electronic newsletter. The next big step for APSP’s outreach and advocacy to ICC is the ICC Code Development Hearings to be held February 18-March 1 in Palm Springs, California, where APSP will present its proposal for adoption of the ANSI/APSP-7 Standard for Suction Entrapment Avoidance into the ICC codes. Fitness Expert Earns Aquatic Engineering Degree
Pennsylvania fitness expert Maria K. Bella recently earned a 2-year aquatic engineering degree from Keiser University (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) eCampus. A sports and aquatics consultant, and the founder of FUNdaMENTAL FITness, Inc., Bella owns and operates companies that provide swimming instruction. The dean’s list graduate plans to use her expertise, including more than 30 years of experience, to help Americans fight obesity through aquatics. MORE.

Regional Updates
Region 2:
Region 2 will host its Tech I and Tech II Schools in Ocean City, MD, from February 18-22, 2008. Currently, 38 students have enrolled in Tech I and 6 have enrolled in Tech II.
The Tidewater Chapter of APSP Region 2 will host a two-day event March 11-12, 2008. On March 11, Paul Wahler will present a 3-hour seminar on Hot Tub Safety and Repair at the Black Pelican in Kitty Hawk, NC from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Tickets are $150 per person for APSP members and $50 for each additional attendee from the same company.
