Outline Approved for 2-Day Course to Certify Hot Tub Service Technicians
The APSP Hot Tub Service Task Force voted at its January 28 meeting in Atlantic City to approve the outline of a new certification course for hot tub service technicians. The course outline, which is based on the APSP Hot Tub Technician Manual, is for a two-day course. The intent of the course is for students to understand customer service and safety, to know the core concepts of hot water chemistry and electricity, and to know the fundamentals of hot tub equipment and control systems.
The course outline has 6 modules: (A) safety, health, and practical knowledge for the hot tub service technician; (B) hot tub structures, operation, and filtration; (C) hot tub electrical systems; (D) hot water chemistry; (E) spa pack components; and (F) maintenance and repair of hot tub accessories.
The task force, which reports to the education committees of the APSP Hot Tub Council and APSP Service Council, has begun to develop a certification exam for the course. The task force also will be working with staff to get other instructional materials developed (e.g., PowerPoint lessons, interactive video). The goal is to have a course ready to be delivered by the end of 2008. The task force foresees a course that eventually could be delivered either as a 2-day class or as an online course.
The APSP Hot Tub Technician Manual is already available for purchase. The manual addresses the specialized and unique needs of the hot tub service technician. Special attention is given to the nature of hot tub installation, service, and maintenance. Topics include shell construction and materials, applicable industry standards and codes, spa pack components, electrical and electronic principles, safety issues, hydraulic configuration, chemical applications, and troubleshooting techniques.
