WSU Receives Grant to Create National Aquatics Institute
Thanks to a $1 million grant from the National Swimming Pool Foundation®, Washington State University researchers plan to create the National Aquatics and Sports Medicine Institute (NASMI). "This will be the world's premier center for aquatic health research," says institute director Dr. Bruce Becker, M.D., a physician and research professor in WSU's College of Education. Dr. Becker is currently working on a 2-year study funded jointly by NSPF and members of the APSP Hot Tub Council. In 2007, he received a grant of $165,000 to study the effects of warm water (hot tub) immersion on the heart and respiratory system. Complete findings will be reported at the 2008 World Aquatic Health Conference, scheduled for October 15-17, 2008, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
