 Gene Fields Takes Helm as APSP Chairman; New Board Members Installed
APSP announced the 2008 officers of its national board of directors during the annual membership meeting, held Tuesday, November 27, 2007 in Orlando, Florida. Gene Fields, South-West Independent Marketing, Inc (S.W.I.M.), Santa Ana, California, is 2008 chairman of the board. Former chairman Penny Johnson, Johnson Pools & Spas, Huntsville, Alabama, is now the immediate past chairman. Terry Brown, Buddy’s Pool Service, Cockeysville, Maryland, moves from the position of secretary/treasurer to that of chairman-elect. Charlie Schobel, Bio-Lab, Inc., Lawrenceville, Georgia, was named the 2008 secretary/treasurer.
“Having worked with Gene in recent years on the national board of directors, I am delighted to pass the role of chairman to a man whose dedication and hard work has raised the bar of professionalism in our industry,” said immediate Past Chairman Penny Johnson. “His vast knowledge and unique experience will help to continue to elevate this industry.”
Fields came to the APSP through the Manufacturers Agents Council, serving as its chairman in 2003. “Coming to the Board of Directors through the Segment Council path, rather than the traditional Chapters and Regions, gives me a different view of the association,” said Fields. “Being a long-time manufacturer’s agent brings me into contact with grassroots members in all APSP categories in my daily sales routine. I believe that this gives me a well-rounded view of the industry and association needs and will serve me well in my term as Chairman.”
Fields brings over 25 years of experience in the pool and spa industry to his chairmanship. He is the founder and CEO of South-West Independent Marketing, Inc. (S.W.I.M), a manufacturer’s agency headquartered in Santa Ana, California.
Prior to establishing S.W.I.M, Fields was the Director of Marketing for A&B Brush manufacturing in California and Sales Director for the Mec-O-Matic division of Ecodyne Corporation (now known as Eco-Water Systems) in Portland, Oregon.
“During my tenure on the Board, I have seen the new strategic plan come together and the Association begin to blossom into a new and more responsive organization. My vision for this Association is to see that plan continue to develop to promote a unity of purpose for all organizations and associations in our industry. I look forward to seeing the industry work together in unity for the betterment of the whole,” said Chairman Fields.
