New Member Resources Available on APSP.org for Pool & Spa Safety Act

APSP has published two new membership resources that provide specific guidance about how to comply with the new federal requirements of the Pool & Spa Safety Act. The two new documents cover frequently asked questions and how the act affects specific businesses, including swimming pool operators, manufacturers, builders, and service companies.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Federal Pool & Spa Safety Act

How Does the New Federal Pool & Spa Safety Act Affect Your Business?

The new law mandates that, effective December 20, 2008, all safety covers in commerce comply with ASME A112.19.18 2007 and that all commercial pools be retrofitted with 2007 ASME-compliant covers. In addition to installing an ASME-compliant cover, commercial pools with a single drain must also install at least one additional suction entrapment avoidance device or system such as an SVRS or a vent system.

The Q&A document addresses specific questions about the Act and covers the immediate needs for compliance that pool and spa professionals must address by December 20. Here are examples of the types of questions that are answered in the Q&A document. The following questions deal with the December 20, 2008, mandate for all pool and spa safety covers in commerce to comply with ASME A112.19.18 2007.

Question #5: How will I know which covers comply?

Answer: They will have the following embossed or permanently marked in a location that is visible when installed:

Or, ”ASME A112.19. 8 2007” and, a flow rating “X GPM”, and “Life: X Years”, and Manufacturer and Model.

Question #6: What if I cannot find the manufacturer or a compliant replacement cover that fits?

Answer: The drain will require permanent disablement, or replacement with a cover and mounting frame that is compliant.

APSP will update the Q&A throughout the year so check-in on a regular basis and watch IC for updates.
