APSP Technical Committee Approves Development of Energy Efficiency Standards

At its meeting June 8-9, the APSP Technical Committee approved the development of two new ANSI/APSP committees to write an energy efficiency standard for portable, self-contained spas and hot tubs relating to the spa requirements of California’s Title 20 and a comprehensive energy efficiency standard for pools, spas, and other non-self-contained aquatic vessels. Members of the APSP spa advisory group that have been working with PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric) and the Davis Energy Group on the California Energy Commission (CEC) Title 20 Code for Spas in California have joined the writing committee.

The Canadian Standards Association has also been invited to join the APSP-14 standards committee, as it is preparing an energy efficiency standard for spas sold in Canada and would like to harmonize the standards.

Once the writing committee prepares a draft, it will be available for industry review and ANSI balloting in accordance with ANSI due process procedures for developing national consensus standards. Manufacturers interested in participating on the standards committee should contact Carvin DiGiovanni.

Other Technical Committee actions:

  • APSP-5 Residential Inground Pool Standard. Lorraine Ross, APSP’s ICC (International Code Council) consultant, will undertake rewriting the published ANSI/APSP-5 2003 Residential Pool Standard into code language before the APSP-5 committee begins revising the standard. The Technical Committee also approved the revision of the water circulation section of ANSI/APSP-5 to address new information about water circulation and how it affects water sanitization and pool water heating, as well as how particulates move toward suction outlets.
  • The Technical Committee approved a revised scope statement for the APSP-12 standard for Public Aquatic Safety and Risk Management.
  • The Technical Committee reviewed for technical accuracy the APSP-11 Water Chemistry standard and made several proposed changes.
