APSP CT Chapter Hosts Code Officials to Discuss ANSI-7 Standard
Following a fatal suction entrapment incident in Greenwich, CT, involving a young boy who became entrapped in a residential pool and drowned, Carvin DiGiovanni attended a local chapter meeting on August 16 in Greenwich with about 30 building code officials to discuss the ANSI/APSP-7 2006 Standard for Suction Entrapment Avoidance. The meeting was hosted by APSP Connecticut member builder John Romano at his pool company, All American Pools & Spas.
DiGiovanni was invited by the CONSPA chapter to participate in another presentation and panel discussion on suction entrapment avoidance before code officials at the Connecticut chapter’s October 23 “Meet the Inspectors” event. About 100 code officials were expected to attend.
According to Romano, at the August code official meeting, “The Greenwich building officials knew that there was a need for them to have a better understanding, so they carved out a one-hour time frame from their normal inspection schedule. Once they were engaged in the learning process, they quickly knew that they needed to devote more time to the learning process and actually stayed two-and-a-half hours. Not only did they bring building officials, but they also brought their electrical and plumbing inspectors.”
“The code officials left the meeting with a favorable appreciation of the ANSI/APSP-7 standard and a tremendous respect for the APSP builders and the expertise they represent. Events like this are examples of how APSP can partner with code officials at the grassroots level for the betterment of the industry and safety of pool and spa owners,” said DiGiovanni.
