Technical Update
At its October meeting, APSP’s Technical Committee cleared the APSP-11 draft standard, Water Quality in Public Pools and Spas, for the ANSI voting and public review process. The draft and ballot will be distributed to more than 40 individuals and organizations nationwide for the development of consensus to publish the standard as an American National Standard that can be adopted into code by state and local jurisdictions. - IAPMO Invites Participation on Code Committee for Pools and Spas
The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) has invited APSP members to participate on the IAPMO Pool and Spa Plumbing Code Committee to revise the 2006 IAPMO Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa, and Hot Tub Code. The code includes water heaters and vents, as well as fuel gas piping. This code has been adopted in many jurisdictions, especially in the West. IAPMO is seeking candidates with backgrounds in the following categories: manufacturer, research, standards and testing agency, and installer/maintainer. - A report on converting the ANSI/NSPI-5 2003 Residential Pool Standard into code language is available. If interested, please contact Carvin DiGiovanni (cdigiovanni@APSP.org).
- A new APSP consumer safety brochure to warn homeowners about suction entrapment is now in the works.
- A new APSP CD is available free to code and health officials from the APSP. The CD contains all nine ANSI/APSP pool and spa design and safety standards, the APSP Builders Manual, and the Service Technician Manual. The purpose of the CD is for APSP members to meet and greet their code officials with this gift in the anticipation of forging an ongoing working relationship. - The APSP-5 standards writing committee on residential pools met October 4 to begin the revision of ANSI/NSPI-5 2003. Sections reviewed were: Article 3, plans and permits; Article 4, structural design; Article 5, pool dimensions and tolerances; Article 6, entry and exits, beach entries, catch basins, raised bond beam, water features, submerged structures, and vanishing edges; Article 7, decks and deck accessories; and Article 9, circulation systems and related components. Copies of the proposed changes are available from Bernice Crenshaw (bcrenshaw@APSP.org).
- The committee approved the 18-page report, APSP Technical Committee Preliminary Report on Suction Outlet Safety and the Effectiveness of ANSI/APSP-7, dated October 5, 2007. Copies are available upon request by contacting Carvin DiGiovanni (cdigiovanni@APSP.org).
